Professional Statement

'˜The Swiss Army Knife for Life'

Spence has been practicing in the mental health field for 24 years. At the age of 33 he completed his M.B.A. but left his corporate career to do something that was more in line with his values. He began his counseling career at a recovery center and soon was advised to pursue a graduate degree in Social Work for more training. In 2003 he enrolled at University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 2005 with an emphasis in community mental health. His internship with the National Center for PTSD exposed him to working with people experiencing crisis and trauma. After graduate school he joined the City of Berkeley's Mobile Crisis Team. Shortly thereafter he joined the San Francisco VA Medical Center where he treated men and women returning from the Middle East with combat experience. His love of history and desire to help people made him a perfect fit for his role in caring for military veterans. Currently in his practice he specializes in Brief therapy but draws on many techniques to help clients address their challenges including Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Interpersonal (IPT) and Narrative.

His areas of expertise often address the following issues:

- Addiction - Depression - Anxiety - Family Relationships - Work Relationships - Intimacy - Lifestyle (Nutrition/Exercise/Hobbies)

Spence adheres to several principles which guide him in his own life and practice including:

- We are extraordinarily resilient. - Finding purpose and meaning is a key for authentic self-discovery and unlocking potential. - Our most challenging times provide our most precious lessons if we face them.

Spence moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989. When time permits, you can find him fishing on his boat off the coast of San Diego or on the Sacramento Delta. Spence is a musician and has recently taken up golf. He welcomes anyone facing life's challenges with the willingness and courage to take the next step and reach out to him.
